i had myself a fabulous Canada Day long weekend. on Saturday, a few others and myself headed out to catch the opening game of the Calgary Stampeders' season at McMahon Stadium. now, i'll admit, i never really understood football until i actually played it in Ecuador in 2005, but after having played a bit of it, i have a deeper appreciation for the CFL and decided to do a "Calgarian" thing, and watch the game (even tho i haven't even watched a BC Lions' game myself!). i had a great time at the game, more than i thought that i would! watching a football game is like like watching, well...a spectacle! here at McMahon stadium, they whip out this horse that gallops around the stadium when the Stamps score! in addition, the stadium is uncovered so you can see the open sky and enjoy the warm evening sun amidst cheering fans. when asked at The Seed, "so, who are you going to cheer for?" i winced, because i have NEVER cheered for anything Calgary before in my life (cos why would i ever cheer for the Flames?) anyways...our opponents were the Hamilton Tiger Cats, and let's just say, the Stamps killed 'em...something like 36-9! part way thru the game, a hare (yes, as i a rabbit) found its way onto the field and stopped the game party way. the little guy ran from one end of the field, to the other, and had fans cheering for him when he crossed the endline! the nite was complete with a fireworks show in honour of Canada Day, and (i suspect) the Stamps win against the Ti-Cats...better luck next time, eh kittys?

Canada Day was...a little less eventful than what i'm used to but still very enjoyable. i've learned that there isn't a lot of free things to do here in Calgary. me, i like being able to go to a lake, the beach, Stanley Park [insert something free that you can do in vancouver here], but in calgary, it's a little more spread out...and a lot like Langley...so it makes for doing things that are free a little difficult. nonetheless i sought out a free event going on at Olympic Plaza (mere steps from my work place) and a couple friends and i enjoyed a free concert by the lead singer of Blue Rodeo (i have no clue who he is) and yet another fireworks show. it wasn't the Jazz Festival on Granville Island, but it was still a pleasant way to spend our nation's Birthday.

[happy birthday, Canada!]

[what is it about fireworks that it's so entertaining? i concluded that it must be some sort of eye stimulation thing....similar to when a baby needs bright lights and noises to keep them entertained!]

all in all, i feel rested, and am ready to head back to work tomorrow morning. hope your long weekend was as relaxing and fun as mine :)
much love,
dL
